With Basement Research, Gebhard Ullmann released his first CD for the Italian label Soul Note in 1995. Four of the most interesting individualists out of the new generation of contemporary jazz players realized their very personal and intense musical ideas. The CD was widely critically acclaimed and has been listed in the US-College Radio Jazz Charts for several months. The second CD 'Kreuzberg Park East' released on Soul Note in 1999 had even more impact in jazz circles. Both CDs featured Ellery Eskelin, Drew Gress and Phil Haynes.
After a European tour with Tony Malaby replacing Eskelin in 1999 (documented on the CD 'Live In Münster') and a 5-year pause, the New Basement Research project went on tour again in 2004 as a quintet. The 4th CD released 2007 once again on Soul Note as part of Gebhard Ullmann's 50th birthday celebrations featuring Julian Argüelles, Steve Swell, John Hebert and Gerald Cleaver, made many Best-of-the-Year lists worldwide and received a 4 1/2 star review in Downbeat. A very successful tour followed closed by a concert at the prestiguous Berlin Jazzfest in November 2007.
The two CDs 'Don't Touch My Music Vol.1&2' recorded live at the Alchemia Club in Krakow during that tour were among the best CDs of the year in All About Jazz NY. The 7th CD of the ensemble entitled 'Hat and Shoes' was released in 2015 on Between The Lines and received raving reviews. Again the CD was listed among the best CDs of the year in the New York City Jazz Record and Downbeat. In April 2018, the band toured Europe to celebrate its 25th anniversary and the 60th birthday of Gebhard Ullmann to prove once again that Basement Research is just as lively and fresh as it was two and a half decades ago.
In 2019 the 8th CD 'Impromptus and Other Short Works' was released on the German WhyPlayJazz label. This CD was one of the most successful Basement Research CDs to date and received about a dozen 5 star reviews and was listed in numerous best-of-the-year-lists around the globe.
LDG wrote in the NYC Jazz Record: 'a superb cast that sings, slides and swerves in navigating Ullmann’s sinewy writing, which is filled with nuance and surprising twists. [...] There is great fun and there are many exciting moments; considering the variety of the pieces and their considerable complexity, the results are both exhausting and exhilarating.' Troy Collins wrote in Jazz Times: 'Gebhard Ullmann is a masterful composer and innovator. His albums of his many bands are extraordinary. Ullmann is a voice to be heard and recognized for the genius it reveals.'
Basement Research will tour one more time in 2023 for its 30th anniversary.
